Alice Melikian Portrait Sculptor

shapeimage_3shapeimage_2Armin T. Wegner Society of USA commissioned the production of a statue of the great German humanist, to be presented on behalf of all Armenians to the citizens of Wuppertal, Wegner’s birthplace, on the occasion of poet’s 120th birthday on October 16, 2006.

Alice Melikian, a noted portrait sculptor, took great efforts to recreate  Wegner’s image of the 1930’s guided by a few existing photographs only. As an eye-witness Wegner reported the Armenian Genocide in WWI. Working on the sculpture was especially significant for Alice, since her close relatives also vanished in the massacres.
